Behind the Body: Fat Loss, Muscle, & Metabolism for Women Over 40
If you're a woman in your 40s or 50s struggling with perimenopause or menopause weight gain, this podcast is for you.
I'm Andrea Cutuk, a double-certified nutrition and fitness coach. I lost 20 pounds in my mid-30s and have maintained it for 10 years, through perimenopause, hormonal shifts, and real life. I'm not someone who lost weight six months ago and started a podcast. I'm someone who's lived in this body, figured it out, and has been maintaining the results long enough to know what actually works and sticks.
Every Monday, Behind the Body covers the real reasons women over 40 gain weight, can't lose it, and what to actually do about it. No generic advice. No extreme diets. Just honest, science-backed strategies built for your hormones, your metabolism, and your lifestyle in this phase of life.
Topics we cover:
- Building a body you're proud of in a sustainable way
- Perimenopause weight gain and why your body is changing
- Fat loss after 40 without restriction or deprivation
- How to boost metabolism and build a stronger body composition
- Sustainable weight loss strategies that work long-term
- Strength training for women over 40 - where to start and why it matters
- Hormone-related weight gain, cortisol, and belly fat

You can lose weight without exercise, even after 40. If you're working out but not losing weight, or you have no time for the gym, no problem!
This episode breaks down the 2 ways to lose weight after 40 (and why only one of them truly works), why trying to out-exercise your food keeps women exhausted with nothing to show for it, what 6 months of workouts gets you without a single change in eating (researchers tested exactly this), what your workouts are really for, and why building muscle before the fat comes off can leave you looking bigger instead of more defined. If the number on the scale won't move no matter how hard you train, the answer is on your plate, and that turns out to be the best news in this episode.

ππ» ABOUT ME:
I'm Andrea, a double-certified NASM Nutrition and Fitness Coach and founder of Behind the Body. For 20 years, I under-ate, avoided weights, and lived on cardio chasing skinny, and none of it gave me a body I was proud of. In my mid-30s, I changed my approach: more protein, real strength training, and a plan that fit my life. I lost 20 pounds, and 10 years later, at 45, I'm still maintaining it through perimenopause. I help women over 40 simplify their approach, build real strength, and get results that last. Every week, I cover the science, the strategy, and the honest truth about fat loss and maintenance for women over 40.

If you're someone who's ever thought to yourself, I just wish I could find the time to work out, or I wish I knew what exercises to do in order to lose the weight, then this episode is for you because in this very episode, I'm gonna tell you why that doesn't even matter, why you never have to step foot in a gym or pick up a dumbbell in order to lose weight. So let's get into it. I'm Andrea and welcome to Behind the Body. If you're over 40 and trying to lose fat, build muscle, or take better care of your health, you're in the right place. Every week we'll tackle the questions women over 40 are asking about nutrition, fitness, metabolism, and aging, helping you spend less time doing what doesn't move the needle and more time focusing on what does without the extremes or the all-or-nothing mindset. It takes about maybe 15 minutes or even less to eat a cheeseburger and fries. Burning that one meal off takes arguably over two hours of maybe the hardest exercise you can do. And I know this firsthand from trying it. In the past, anytime I ate a meal that I felt guilty about, I would do extra cardio the next day to try to work it off. And of course, it never worked. That meal was maybe around a thousand calories, if not more. And my hardest workout, which for me is an hour on the Stairmaster, with my heart rate upwards in the 160s or even higher, burned only 600 calories. That is why you cannot outwork a bad diet. What you eat is what decides your weight. Your workouts, they build your muscle and create your shape. And yes, they do burn calories, but never enough to make up for what you ate. So if you've been putting off losing weight because you just don't have time to work out, here's the good news. You do not need a workout to lose weight. I'm gonna tell you how much of your weight loss comes down to what you eat. And I put that at 80%, and I'm gonna tell you why. And then I'm gonna tell you what your workouts are actually for and why building muscle before the fat comes off can leave you looking bigger and thicker instead of leaner and more defined, like you probably want. And in case you're new here, I'm Andrea. I lost over 20 pounds in my mid to late 30s and I've kept it off for 10 years now. And I'm a double certified nutrition and fitness coach. And everything I'm talking about and everything I usually talk about in these episodes, I've lived firsthand. And a lot of it I've seen with my friends and family and my own clients. Okay, let's get into point number one. I want to tell you why food is 80% of your weight loss and weight management. Because there are only two ways to lose weight. The first way is that you eat fewer calories than your body burns. And the second way is you burn more calories than you eat. Now, I know those two sound like the exact same thing, but they are actually nowhere close. Eating a meal takes no time, right? You can just eat an entire plate of food in a matter of minutes. Like I'm a fast eater, so this is me all the time. Like I eat super fast. I'm always done before everybody else. You can easily consume 1200 calories in 15 minutes without even trying. But burning calories, on the other hand, is slow. An hour of super hard, high-intensity, sweaty work burns maybe 600 calories. So trying to burn off what you ate almost never works, no matter how hard you go at it. And that's not just my experience. Researchers pulled 14 clinical trials, almost 2,000 people who exercised for six months and never changed what they ate. The average weight loss amongst these 2,000 people was three and a half pounds. Six months of workouts, no changes in food, and only three and a half pounds lost on average. That's burning calories done perfectly in a controlled environment. And that's literally everything it gets you. And I see the same thing with the women I know in my life, my friends and family and clients, and me too in the past. They work out four or five times a week, maybe even more. They are working genuinely hard and their weight will not budge because their food, their diets never changed. Their effort is there. It's just aimed at burning the calories off. And that's the part that barely moves your weight. So the strategy that works most effectively is eating fewer calories than your body burns. And there's a way that we can figure that out. There's actually two numbers that you need to know. You need to know how many calories your body uses in a day and how many calories you're eating now. Those two numbers are the whole eating side of this. And that's why I put 80% of weight loss on your food. Because if you get your food right, then the weight comes off, gym or no gym. Which raises the obvious question and brings us to point two. If food takes the weight off, then what are workouts even for? Your workouts have one job to do, but it's a big job. They build your body underneath your fat, your muscle, your strength, and your shape. When you train, you're basically deciding how your body will look once you lose weight, how strong you are, and how you'll look and move as you get older in your 50s and 60s and beyond. Food can't build any of that. Only weightlifting can. And this is where the pressure comes off of you. Since what you eat is what decides your weight, you can start losing weight this week, actually today, starting at your next meal with zero workouts. If your schedule is packed and you cannot find the time to get to the gym right now, you still sit down and eat three or four or five times a day. And that is the part that's directly in your control and the part that decides your weight. So start with your food and then add training when you can at whatever pace works for you. Obviously, if you know me or you follow me or listen to my podcasts, I'm a huge proponent of weightlifting after 40, but this episode is not about that. So I will save that. But my own life and weeks basically work exactly this way now. What I eat every day, what I eat for all my meals, maintains my weight where I want it. If I want to lose a little bit of weight, I pull back on my calories a little bit. And my workout time goes to building and keeping my muscles. I had those two things backwards for 20 years and I look back and regret all the time that I lost and spent doing so much work for nothing. That's the same thing happening to you when you tell yourself that you'll start losing weight once your schedule calms down, once you have time to go to the gym, once you have time to like figure it out, right? Your schedule may decide whether or not you can work out. That's true. But it usually doesn't decide what you put in your mouth. So rather than trying to figure out how you're going to fit workouts into your already busy schedule and have that one more thing to stress about, put your attention on the three or four or five times that you eat a day. But if your schedule does allow time for working out, then there's one thing that you should know before you train hard while you're still carrying around extra fat. And it's the reason I said you could end up looking bigger than you'd like. Point number three, let's talk about why building muscle before losing the fat can make this happen. If you're carrying extra fat and you build muscle without losing that fat first, then you can end up looking bigger and thicker than you do now and not more lean and defined as you think that you would get as you work out and have these hard workouts. And it's because the muscle sits underneath the fat and it pushes the fat outward. So you're basically getting wider first and your measurements can go up, like your hip, your waist, your thighs, your arms, while you're training harder than you ever have. I see this trend on social media every now and then. It rotates through my feed where women are talking about how working out and lifting weights made them bulky and thick. But the problem isn't the workouts. The problem is a layer of the fat that they've added the muscle to. The solution to this is simple. It's not easy, but it's simple. It's working on your diet to take that fat off first or even at the same time as you train. And then the muscles that you're building will start showing instead of hiding underneath the fat. That same muscle that made you look thicker when you carried more weight is what gives you that shape you wanted once the fat over it comes off. And none of this means that you should skip the gym until the weight is off. Absolutely not. Keep training if you're already training or start when you're ready because you want that muscle built and waiting for the day that the fat comes off. But just stop using workouts to cancel out what you ate. And remember the numbers from the start, right? 10 minutes to eat a cheeseburger and french fries for like a thousand calories and super hard, high intensity on the Stairmaster for an hour just to burn 60% of those calories. It doesn't work and it leaves you exhausted for nothing. So if your clothes have gotten tighter since you started training, consider changing what's on your plate and leave your workouts exactly where they are. So here's what I want you to take away from this episode. Gear weight is decided by food choices that you make in those three to four or five times a day, which means that you get a fresh chance at it every few hours, every time you sit down to eat. And your workouts are building the muscle and building the body that you'll see the moment the fat comes off. So food first, training on top, and what you see in the mirror and your body composition will finally start to change. Okay, so where do you even start with this? I mentioned the two numbers that you need to know at the beginning: how many calories your body burns in a day, and also how far under that you need to eat to lose fat healthily. I make this very simple with a free fat loss formula workbook that I have. It walks you step by step through your specific numbers, your maintenance calories, your protein target, and the calorie deficit for your specific body and not just some like random generic target found, you know, on the internet. I'm gonna link that free workbook in the show notes below. So make sure you grab that and then work through your numbers. So if this brought some clarity to why your workouts will not burn off the food that you ate and that your diet is everything in your weight loss and weight management efforts, I would love for you to follow the show so that the next episode is already downloaded in your library. And if you have 10 extra seconds, it would mean the world to me if you could leave a rating for this podcast. It's a single biggest factor that helps other women like us over 40 find this podcast.
